Biography
Walter Voit was born in Cologne, Germany. He grew up in Mt. Pleasant, SC and was valedictorian at Wando High School. He was a McDermott Scholar at The University of Texas at Dallas and graduated with a B.S. in Computer Science in 2005 and an M.S. in Artificial Intelligence in 2006. He worked for two summers at Los Alamos National Labs, spent an eight month study abroad in Germany and worked for over a year at nanotechnology startup, Zyvex. Walter enjoys sports, notably soccer and basketball and is an avid board game player. Walter is co-founder, President and CTO of Atlanta startup company Syzygy Memory Plastics, Inc.
Research
Walter is pursuing a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering and is funded through and NSF IGERT grant as a member of the Technological Innovation: Generating Economic Results (TI:GER) Program. Walter is exploring new ways to synthesize acrylate mers and in what ratios to combine them with cross-linking polymers to enable a new generation of shape memory materials. Ranging from Class I biomedical devices to commodity products, Walter's research focuses on novel cost-effective ways to better products using shape memory polymer technology.
